Planetary Gear Transmission
For the ME 14 Design and Fabrication class, teams of four were challenged to design the best fixed-ratio transmission to power a bicycle wheel with a DC motor. The judgement criteria would be based on the time for the bicycle wheel to reach a specified speed and on the maximum power output from the transmission. To achieve the task, our team chose to develop a planetary gear transmission, which is known for its high efficiency and low-profile.
My primary work was on the design and fabrication of the planetary gear spider, selection of gears and transmission components, and on the optimization of our budget.
